WORLD CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE TOP SINGAPOREAN EATERS
By Zakaria Abdul Wahab
SINGAPORE, May 7 (Bernama) -– Singapore is hosting an international Biggest
Eater Competition, pitting top local eaters against world’s champions at the
Bishan Junction shopping mall here this Sunday.
World No: 1 Joey Chestnut, World No: 2 Takeru Kobayashi and World No: 2
woman Juliet Lee will compete with 31 Singaporean finalists, including five
women, eating shrimp wonton, a popular Asian food.
The CP Biggest Eater Competition 2010 is organised by CP Foods, Thailand’s
leading agro-industrial and foods conglomerate.
Joyce Yap, Assistant Vice-President of Charoen Pokphand Intertrade Singapore
Pte Ltd, said shrimp wonton was chosen for the competition because it was the
best-selling product of the company and the size was suitable for the eating
contest.
At a media conference here Friday, she said the competition was also aimed
at providing Singaporeans with a platform to compete in a professional arena and
witness the competition live, apart from showcasing the exciting eating sport.
For the world’s biggest eaters, this will be the first time they will be
tucking in shrimp wonton after having gobbled loads and chunks of hamburgers,
hot dogs, rice balls, dumplings, sandwiches, pizzas and clams in previous world
competitions.
Chestnut, 25, a construction engineer from the United States who started his
professional eater career from 2005 and has defeated the Japanese-born Kobayashi
in 2007 and 2008, held the world record of eating 103 hamburgers in only eight
minutes.
Kobayashi, 32, set his first record in 2001 where he ate 50 hot dogs in 12
minutes, winning the Hot Dog Eating Contest and constantly breaking his own
record for six years in a row.
Juliet Lee, a China-born 44-year old businesswoman and mother of two
daughters, has only been competing professionally since December 2006, and her
past record includes eating 23 dozen clams in six minutes.
For this Sunday’s competition, Chestnut said he hoped to gobble 300 shrimp
wontons, while Lee, who said she loved the yummy wonton, would try to eat as
much as 200 pieces.
Meanwhile, Kobayashi who had no clue how much wonton he would be eating,
said he would try to shovel in more than Chestnut.
