German NGO helps restore life in minefields

Quang Tri (VNA) - The German non-governmental organisation, Solidarity Service International (SODI), has helped central Quang Tri province clear mines on more than 760 ha, and restore normal life for local people in the areas.

SODI's aid project to Quang Tri province, which started in May 1998 in cooperation with the local military command, also held training courses for 36,000 local people on the danger of mines in Vinh Linh, Trieu Phong, Cam Lo, Gio Linh and Hai Lang districts.

SODI has provided more than 5 million EUR for the mine clearance work.

As part of the project, three new villages has been built on the former minefields, including Phuong Coi village in Cam Lo district for 54 families, Tan Dinh village in Trieu Phong district for 100 families and Con Trung villages in Cam Lo district for 65 families.

In each village, SODI funded the construction of infrastructurefacilities, including roads, electricity and water supply system, schools and houses and training in farming technique as well as provided loans for local people to start animal breeding and crop cultivation.

The NGO has also given 1.95 billion VND to build a modern health care centre in the mountainous Linh Hai commune in Gio Linh district.

In 2007, SODI in coordination with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in Quang Tri began a 4.8 billion VND programme to build houses for 320 families of victims of mines and Agent Orange.

Quang Tri province was one of the localities suffering heaviest ravages of the US war, with each people in the province estimated to bear about 280 kg of mine and bombs in average.
