RCA otologists conduct 11 surgeries in Somalia
Hargeisa, Somalia, May 9, 2010 (WAM)- - Otologists operating under a UAE Red Crescent Authority's programme for prevention and control of deafness has conducted two surgeries for cochlear implant (CI) on two Somali orphan sisters suffering from hearing impairment. A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. The cochlear implant is often referred to as a bionic ear.
Dr. Mazen Al Hajeri, Emirati head of the RCA's programme, said the CI surgeries on the two poor sisters were successful. ''The two recipients will restore hearing by Saturday after activation of the implants which contains a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, receiver and stimulator,'' he added.
Dr. Al Hajeri, also an ENT Surgeon, added that more nine surgeries for ear bone repair, stapes replacement and ossicular replacement prosthesis had been conducted. ''These highly delicate surgeries are being operated for the first time in Somalia as part of the RCA healthcare and humanitarian initiatives to assist the most vulnerable segments in the society,'' he said. He explained that these surgeries improve the patient's ability of hearing by 20 to 60 per cent.
He indicated the medical team had examined hundreds of cases over the past few days and about 40 of them were shortlisted for intrusive surgeries. Those who don't operations, he added, will be given free medications and assistive listening devices.
