REMAIN VIGILANT AGAINST DENGUE:MALAYSIA
KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Bernama) -- The health ministry has advised the public
to be vigilant and continue taking preventive measures against dengue.
Deputy minister Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said that although dengue
fever cases were on the decline, the death toll recorded so far this year, was
higher than that recorded over the same period last year.
"Between January and May 1, this year, only 16,455 dengue cases were
reported as compared to 18,401 cases in the corresponding period last year.
"Yet, 56 deaths were reported over the same period this year, an increase by
30 per cent from 43 deaths last year," she told reporters after opening the
1Malaysia Health Carnival in Setiawangsa here Sunday.
She said fogging with insecticide alone, would not be able to control
dengue.
"What is more important is for everyone to spend at least 10 minutes a week
to destroy potential breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquitoes in their
residential areas," she said, adding that those suspected of having dengue fever
should immediately seek medical attention.
