KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (Bernama) -- Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim will receive the World Telecommunication and Information Society Award 2010 in Shanghai on behalf of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
The ministry in a statement Monday said Najib had been named one of three
recipients of this year's award, which focuses on eminent personalities who have
contributed to the use of information communication technology (ICT).
The award will be presented on May 17 during the World Expo 2010 in
Shanghai, China.
"Najib is credited by the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU) as having made connectivity one of his priorities. He is acknowledged for
placing a high priority on strengthening ICT infrastructure as part of
Malaysia's New Economic Model.
"His administration has supported the work of ITU in strengthening global
cybersecurity through the IMPACT Centre in Cyberjaya," said the statement.
This prestigious award has been presented by ITU since 2005 to distinguished
personalities for their contribution to building an inclusive and more
equitable information society.
Last year, the ITU Award was given to President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva of
Brazil.
