SUCCESSFUL VISIT WITH RM500,000 BUSINESS DEALS NEGOTIATED, SAYS MALAYSIAN PM
From Jamaluddin Muhammad
PHNOM PENH, May 11 (Bernama) -- Describing his three-day official visit to
Cambodia as successful, Najib Tun Razak said Tuesday that close to
RM500,000 (US$155,183) business deals were negotiated.
The prime minister said 196 business meetings were held between Malaysian
investors and businessmen and their Cambodian counterparts during the visit.
The value of business negotiations among them was US$136.6 million, he told
reporters at the Phnom Penh International Airport before departing for Kuala
Lumpur.
Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor left the airport at 11am
(Malaysian time: 12 noon) and are scheduled to arrive at the Kuala Lumpur
International Airport at 2.30pm (Malaysian time).
He said the big sum involved in the business negotiations during the visit
was a good indication that Malaysia could maintain its position to be among the
largest investors in this country.
Najib said recovery of the global economic crisis would also contribute in
enhancing the bilateral trade between the two nations.
According to him, the business community should take advantage of the warm
ties enjoyed by both countries as well as their leaders.
"The government of Cambodia and its people have a very positive sentiment
towards Malaysia," he said.
Furthermore, the long established bilateral ties coupled with Malaysian
roles under the United Nations during the transition period in the country in
the early 1990s after the civil war have contributed to the positive sentiment
towards Malaysia, he added.
Najib was optimistic that the current cordial relationship could be further
enhanced.
This was his first official visit to this country after assuming office
April last year.
Najib also said that his counterpart Hun Sen was expected to visit Malaysia
early next year.
The prime minister concluded his final day visit by having an audience with
King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace here.
"The king expressed warm sentiment towards Malaysia," he said.
The premier also called on the National Assembly president Heng Samrin and
Senate president Chea Sim Tuesday.
On Monday, Najib held a bilateral meeting with Hun Sen at the Council of
Ministers and both leaders later addressed the Cambodia-Malaysia Business
Forum.
He also visited Malaysian telecommunication giant Hello Axiata's operation
centre and the construction of the new complex of the Malaysian embassy here
Monday.
Rosmah attended a separate function Monday by visiting the Kuntha Bopha
IV Hospital and Bun Rany Hun Sen High School here.
The visiting couple were entertained to a official dinner hosted by Hun Sen
and his wife Bun Rany at a hotel here Monday night.
