Worker exposed to radiation in Yokosuka nuclear fuel plant

YOKOSUKA, Japan, July 11 Kyodo - A worker was exposed to minor radiation Wednesday when a small amount of uranium scattered in a plant producing nuclear fuel for reactors in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, nuclear fuel company Global Nuclear Fuel-Japan Co. saidThursday.

The company said no radioactive substance leaked outside the plant but the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry's Nuclear and Industrial safety Agency issued a strict warning Thursday to the Yokosuka-based company as it reportedto the ministry more than six hours after the incident took place.

The company found that about 8 grams of uranium scattered from a machine that produces uranium dioxide pellets, which are used as fuel for the reactors, after an alarm went off in the plant at around 5:24 a.m. Wednesday, accordingto the company.

The incident occurred as the plant activated the machine without shutting the pipe that delivers uranium dioxide powder, the material for the pellets, to the machine, it said.==Kyodo
