UN MUST BE DEMOCRATISED, SAYS MALAYSIA
KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- The United Nations (UN) must be reformed to make it more effective in pursuing the world body's principles and purposes, as well as improve its credibility, said Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay.
Realising that unilateralism could pose a serious threat to international
stability, he said Malaysia recognised that the UN must change to keep pace with
the rapidly-changing international environment.
He said, to ensure the world body remained relevant, it was imperative that
the UN be democratised and be truly reflective of the will of the international
community.
"Reform of the UN must lead to the removal of power asymmetries
institutionalised by the current arrangements, and aim towards strengthening the
multilateral system, not allowing for its diminution," he said in his closing
keynote address at the International Conference on World War II and the Rise of
Multilateralism at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The conference was organised by World Future, a Malaysia-based Islamic
online portal here Thursday.
Kohilan said the desired change of the UN would hopefully, pave the way for
the voice of all states to be heard fairly at the international level.
On the war, Kohilan said its legacy and bitter lessons must be remembered
and respected to ensure such tragedy did not recur.
He said Malaya, as what Malaysia was formerly known, was not spared the
impact of the war, as over 100,000 of its people died.
Meanwhile, the conference declaration, among others, called for existing and
simmering conflicts to be resolved peacefully, instead of waging war and
interventions as this could lead to another war.
The declaration also said that all attempts to re-write the history of the
war must be strongly condemned, regardless of the status of the falsifier,
whether a personality, an organisation or a government body.
It also said that peace should be the ultimate "struggle" for all peoples of
the world and that the international community should prevent the production of
weapons of mass destruction.
