UAE among six member states in committee of heritage experts
Abu Dhabi, May 16, 2010 (WAM)- HE Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, director general of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), announced that a delegation of the United Arab Emirates - led by ADACH - will participate in the meetings of the UNESCO starting Monday May 17, 2010. The participation will be through a committee of experts formed to discuss and study the files submitted by countries to record elements of intangible heritage at UNESCO list.
Mazrouei said that the committee of experts, which was formed at the third meeting of the International Committee to Safeguard Intangible Heritage, held in Istanbul in November 2008, will also include members from Turkey, South Korea, Estonia, Kenya, and Mexico.
He stressed that the choice of the United Arab Emirates to be among the six countries that represent the world in this committee is a sign of the high status enjoyed by the country, led by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
It also shows, Mazrouei added, the expertise and the status of UAE experts, and further demonstrates the successes achieved by ADACH, under the guidance of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
Mazrouei hailed ADACH's success in attracting regional and international events, conferences, seminars, and workshops on the safeguarding of heritage, and its role in the building of bridges between peoples and cultures.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nasser Ali Al Hemieri, Director of Intangible Heritage Department at ADACH, and head of the UAE delegation, said the purpose of forming a committee of experts is to evaluate the files submitted by countries for the registration of elements at the UNESCO list intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
Hemieri said the UNESCO committee will also deal with emerging issues dealing with intangible heritage and discussions on modifying some internal regulations. In addition to Hemiri, the UAE's delegation also includes Dr. Ismail Ali Al Faheel, adviser on intangible heritage at ADACH, Dr. Sulayman Najm Khalaf, an expert in intangible heritage, and Mohamed Ferihat, legal counsel for ADACH.
