SAUDI FIRM KEEN TO SET UP PETROCHEM HUB IN ECER, SAYS FORMER PM ABDULLAH

From Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah

JEDDAH, May 18 (Bernama) -- An oil and gas company from Saudi Arabia has shown keen interest to set up a petrochemical hub in the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) to cater to the Far East and Asia-Pacific markets.

Adviser to Corridor Development in Malaysia, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, said
during the business meeting here, the Saudis encouraged Malaysia to explore the
potential of following the Brazilian model for refineries, by utilising them in
petrochemical activities.

"It was also discussed that if the gas supply could be made available,
downstream activities could be developed in Malaysia," he told Bernama here
Monday.

Abdullah is leading the ECER Development Council's (ECERDC) investment
mission to West Asia, including Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates, Riyadh and
Jeddah in Saudi Arabia from May 7-17.

The mission, a follow-up to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's
earlier visit to Saudi Arabia in January, was aimed at attracting investors as
well as enhancing bilateral business relationships with the West Asian nations.

He said during the business meeting, he told the investors that Petroliam
Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has the biggest integrated petrochemical complex in
Kertih.

In the oil, gas and petrochemical sector, Malaysia has the Kertih Polymer
Park and Petronas Petroleum Industry Complex in Terengganu, as well as
the Gebeng integrated Petrochemical Complex in Pahang.

Another project is Tanjung Agas Oil and Gas and Maritime Industrial Park,
located south of Kuantan Port.

The park will act as a one-stop service centre and offshore base to serve
and support the region's upstream and downstream oil and gas exploration and
production activities.

The oil, gas and petrochemical industry is one of the leading industries in
Malaysia, with significant hydrocarbon reserves located offshore Terengganu,
contributing significantly to the nation's gross domestic product.

Also present at the interview were ECERDC chief executive officer,
Jebasingam Issace John, Deputy Pahang state secretary (development), Mahadiah
Mohamad and ECER Terengganu CEO, Zulkifli Mohamad.

ECER, which covers Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and the district of Mersing
in Johor, is positioning itself as a globally competitive destination for
investors.
