Municipality of Abu Dhabi starts trial run of LED light signals

Abu Dhabi, May 18, 2010 (WAM)- The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City called on the public and road users to take part in the questionnaire currently being run about the new traffic light signalling system which has recently been operated at the Corniche Street and Zayed 1 Street, such that it can carry out and optimal assessment of the modern system and examine the extent of its effectiveness and impact on streamlining traffic from all respects.
The survey will also help the Municipality identify the requisites of upgrading the service to the highest level and accordingly meet the expectations and enhance the safety of road users; both drivers '&' pedestrians.
The Municipality called on road users to communicate with the Municipality online through the website (www.adm.gov.ae), complete the e-questionnaire, and make their suggestions '&' feedbacks on the new system so as to explore their opinions and carry out the required improvements in preparation for generalizing the system to all roads '&' intersections of Abu Dhabi.
The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has already started the trial run of the new LED light signal at the Corniche Street and Zayed 1 Street under the initial stage towards generalizing the system following the assessment of the results of the trial phase. The move comes in the context of a comprehensive plan to revamp the traffic control network in the city, introduce intelligent traffic systems that offer advanced methods of traffic management, and uplift the safety level of roads network.
The new light signal system, which is being designed at par with the highest global practices '&' expertise, is characterized by providing a wider '&' much clear visibility range for road users, and saves 80% of power consumption, as the system uses only 20 watts maximum unlike the old-fashioned system which consumes 100 watts, so it involves a considerable cut in the power consumption levels. Moreover, the system does not require continued maintenance, has a longer lifetime '&' operational period ranging from 7 to 10 years, ensures highest safety levels to road users, and minimizes the occurrence of accidents; thanks to the high intensity of light featuring these signals.
The heads of the light signals of the new system have been installed in a vertical position along Zayed 1 Street (Intersections: IP6, IP5A); which is the applicable model at the intersections of Abu Dhabi city; whereas the heads of the light signals have been installed in a horizontal manner along the Corniche Street (Intersection IP 60B).
Through using this advanced mode of control systems, the Municipality aims at reducing power consumption (rationalize expenditure), conserve the environment as the system is considered an environment-friendly powered by low-voltage power, and maintain the public safety as any electrical short at the intersection does not pose any threat to road users such as drivers and pedestrians. The system maintains the safety of the staff carrying out protective or corrective maintenance as the current used does not imply a substantial danger to the lives of workers. Furthermore, these types of control systems have fewer frequencies of electrical cable faults and do not require intensive regular maintenance.
The installation of the new light signals is part of the methodology of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City to improve its community-oriented services with the aim of serving all segments and meeting requirements everywhere in a safe '&' convenient manner that saves time '&' effort, enhance the corporate image of the Municipality, and illustrate its pioneering role in the comprehensive strategy that seeks to build integrated systems capable of making a true addition to its fine galaxy of services.
