RAFIDAH: MALAYSIA WILL ABLE TO ACHIEVE DEVELOPED NATION STATUS BY 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 (Bernama) -- Former International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz is positive that Malaysia will be able to achieve developed nation status by 2020 despite not meeting the annual average growth rate target of seven per cent.

Rafidah said the government has doing everything possible to recover from
the impact of the global financial crisis.

"We have to work harder to get higher growth rate in the next nine years.
I'm positive that given time in the nine years, we'll be able to make it up,
maybe not exactly seven per cent growth but over six per cent is good enough, we
are reaching there," she said.

She was speaking to reporters after delivering her paper at the Sixth World
Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) Businesswomen Forum here Tuesday.

According to Rafidah, besides achieving a higher annual growth rate,
Malaysia also needs to have a developed society in its own mould by 2020.

"We have targeted ourselves into having a developed society in our own mould
which means our society in 2020 would be multiracial, cohesive, tolerant,
respect for each other and the absence of polarisation," she said.

Rafidah said Malaysia still needed foreign direct investments (FDIs) going
forward because FDIs come only with capital but also with technology, markets,
potential for enhanced technology and skill capacity.

"The capital plus technology, knowledge, know-how and skills are good for
us because the spin-off is very wide," she said.

The former minister said Malaysian companies must always be ready to venture
into other markets and even the smallest country in order to balance some
negative trade with major markets.

Local companies, she said, must be aggressive in promoting their products
and services in order to remain competitive.

"We must be telling the world we have very good products and services. We
must do this globally," she added.
