Laos attends Bahrain Global Forum

VIENTIANE,18 MAY (KPL) - A Lao high-ranking delegation led by Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on 14-16 May attended the Bahrain Global Forum under the theme “Re-balancing global geo-economic strategies for security, growth and development”.
The forum hosted by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies and the government of Bahrain, with 270 participants from 48 countries across the globe has debated current geo-economic trends and encouraged a global perspective in new centres of economic power.
Dr Thongloun was selected as a member of the forum chair and gave comments regarding the development of energy resources for the growth and security of the economy.
He pointed out some useful lessons learnt by Laos in addressing the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and the global financial and economic crisis in 2008-2009 period.
He said the economy could recover through the implementation of harmonised and strict macro-economic policy, especially the adjustment of revenue and expenditure, as well as the adjustment of imported and exported goods, the amendment to an investment law to attract major investors, the improvement of the country’s bank capacity to provide capital for investment, debt settlement, and the maintenance of political stability and social order.
Dr Thongloun also explained the potential of Laos to address problems with energy shortages and global warming through the development of hydropower projects which are a source of arguably clean energy for development and export.
During the forum, the Lao Deputy Prime Minister also held bilateral talks with the Bahraini foreign minister to enhance future relations between the two countries.
