S. Korea's exports to Greece, Iceland nearly double in April
SEOUL, May 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's exports to Greece and Iceland nearly
doubled in April from a month earlier thanks to an economic turnaround despite
fiscal problems in those European countries, a customs office report showed
Wednesday.
According to the report by the Korea Customs Service, Seoul's outbound shipments
to Athens jumped 96 percent on-month to US$138.47 million in the reported month,
while imports from Greece remained nearly unchanged at $4.87 million.
As the euro continued its slide against the U.S. dollar, with Greece's debt
crisis rocking Europe, South Korea's exports to the European country plunged 78.8
percent in February from the previous month.
But exports have been on the rise since March, fueled by signs of turnaround in
the global economy, it said.
South Korea's exports to Iceland also soared 91 percent from a month earlier to
$81.56 million in April in spite of last month's airspace shutdown, caused by a
giant ash cloud that spewed from a volcano in the Scandinavian country.
In the same period, Seoul's combined exports to the 27 European Union member
countries fell 1.5 percent to $4.72 billion and imports dropped 10.1 percent to
$2.95 billion.
