MP GETS ONE MONTH'S JAIL FOR POLYGAMY WITHOUT PERMISSION




KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Kinabatangan Member of Parliament
Bung Moktar Radin,51, was Wednesday sentenced to one month's jail by Gombak
Timur Syariah Lower Court for committing polygamy without the court's
permission.

Syarie Judge Wan Mahyuddin Wan Muhammad however allowed a stay of execution
on Bung Moktar who was granted RM1,000 (US$308) bail with one surety.

He ordered Bung Moktar's counsel Amli Embong to file a notice of appeal to
the Shah Alam High Court in 14 days.

Earlier, Wan Mahyuddin who described Bung Moktar as an icon said the MP had
committed a serious offence which should be dealt with severely.

"The case was given wide coverage by the mass media and many people do not
understand the concept of polygamy in Islam. As such, this sentence for marriage
without permission can raise public awareness."

Bung Moktar was charged with committing the offence with Zizie Izette Abdul
Samad, 31, at house No 12, Jalan TC2B/3 Cemerlang Heights, Taman Melati, Gombak
at 8.50pm on Dec 16, last year.


He was charged under Section 124 of the Selangor Islamic Family Law
Enactment 2003 which provides for a fine of not more than RM1,000 or a jail term
of not more than six months or both.

Bung Moktar was also fined RM1,000 or one month's jail for abetting Zizie in
marrying her without consent of the Registrar of Marriage, Divorce and
Reconciliation at the same place, time and date.

Zizie was also fined RM1,000 or one month's jail for marrying Bung Moktar
without consent of the Registrar of Marriage, Divorce and Reconciliation at the
same place, time and date.

The popular actress who was charged under Section 40 (2) of the same
enactment was also fined RM1,000 or six month's jail for abetting Bung Mokhtar
in committing polygamy without consent of the court.

On both charges, the couple were charged under Section 134 of the Selangor
Islamic Family Law Enactment 2003 which carries a fine of not more than RM1,000
or not more than six months jail or both.

Zizie's three brothers, Ahmad Shahazmi, 48, Samzy Fuzette, 34, and Shaheizy
Sam,27, and Bung Moktar's friends Sahari Ahmad, 54, and Titing Putang,56, were
also fined RM1,000 or six month's jail for abetting in the case.

They were charged under Section 134 of the same enactment.


Ahmad Shahazmi was also fined RM1,000 for another charge of solemnising
Zizie's marriage to Bung Moktar without permission of Gombak Timur Registrar of
Marriage under Section 40(1)(a) of the same enactment.

Samzy and Shaheizy were also fined RM1,000 for being witnesses in the
marriage between Zizie and Bung Moktar.

Shafezan Rusli and Zusyarafain Yusof from the Selangor Syariah Division
prosecuted while all four accused were represented by Amli Embong.
