Yemen renews commitment to encounter piracy

LONDON, May 19 (Saba) - Yemen reiterated on Wednesday its incessant commitment and cooperation with other countries to
encounter the maritime piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Gulf of Aden and Western Indian Ocean.

The statement was made by the Deputy Executive Chairman of the General Authority
for Maritime Affairs Hani al-Baw'ani in a speech he delivered at the meetings of
the 87th
session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) held in the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) in the British capital, London.
Al-Baw'ani highlighted the role Yemen plays to implement the Djibouti code to
combat maritime piracy and armed robbery against ships in Gulf of Aden and Western
Indian Ocean,
which was signed at a meeting held in Djibouti on January 2009 by the region's
countries.
He reviewed Yemen's efforts to execute its obligations as an active member in IMO
and especially its efforts in completing the establishment of the regional center
to coordination
and information exchange in Sana'a as a prerequisite requirement of the Djibouti
code of conduct.
He talked about the importance of the center, though which all countries of Gulf of
Aden and the Red Sea will exchange information and coordinate efforts to carry out
joint
anti-piracy tasks to enhance maritime security.
Al-Baw'ani also reviewed the technical efforts undertaken by the Ministry of
Transport and the General Authority for Maritime Affairs and the successful
military operations
carried out by the marine and coastguard forces to rescue a number of Yemeni and
foreign ships from pirates.
