UAE ranks first regionally and 16th globally in Global Enabling Trade Report 2010

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) ranked first in Middle East and North Africa region and 16th globally in the 2010 Global Enabling Trade Report published by the World Economic Forum, ahead of the United States of America, United Kingdom and Chile.
The UAE jumped two places in the Enabling Trade Index compared to last year, having achieved excellent results ranking in the top ten out of the 125 nations globally in a number of sub-pillars included in the 2010 report.
Commenting on report, Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade said, "Under the directives of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the UAE adopts a foreign trade policy built on the foundation of openness and achievement of balance in the international market that is driven by 192 countries, including 153 member countries of the World Trade Organisation, with the aim of promoting investment relations between the UAE and other countries, to build effective trade partnerships that are mutually beneficial, and to achieve common goals with other international trading partners."
She added, "The results of the Global Enabling Trade Report have shown that the UAE is rapidly growing in the promotion of external trade based on the best global practices, which are reflected in the performance indicators and pillars included in the report. In the commercial sector, the Government sought out to build a strong infrastructure and worked towards promoting the use of information technology and telecommunications within the sector, in addition to the extra efforts to review and reform the economic legislations and laws on an ongoing basis to achieve better future economic prospects."
The methodology used to rank the countries in the Global Enabling Trade Report is based on the four key indicators consisting of nine sub-pillars, these are; market access, border administration, transport, infrastructure and telecommunications, as well as the business environment index in which the UAE was ranked ninth among 125 countries worldwide.
The UAE performed exceptionally well and featured in the list of top ten nations globally in a number of the sub-pillars, among the 125 nations that were included in the report. These and Domestic and foreign market access, efficiency of the import - export procedures (9th place), efficiency of customs administration, transparency of border administration, the availability and quality of transport infrastructure (4th place), availability and quality of transport services, availability and use of information technology and telecommunications, regulatory environment, as well as physical security (4th place).
The report led to a number of recommendations to strengthen the country's position including the development of e-services through the facilitation electronic customs clearance procedures, reducing customs barriers faced by UAE exporters , and reducing the customs tariffs which are relatively high.
The World Economic Forum issues a number of reports, including the Global Enabling Trade Report and the Global Competitiveness Report whereby it measures and compares countries, while highlighting the challenges that must be addressed. The World Economic Forum also organises a number of events and activities including the Summit on the Global Agenda which was Dubai in 2008. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
