WCY REPORT PROVES M'SIA ABLE TO PROVIDE CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT

JOHOR BAHARU (Malaysia), May 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia was proven able to
provide a conducive environment for overseas investors when World
competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) 2010 put Malaysia among 10 most competitive
nations.
In saying this Friday, Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister
Mukhriz Mahathir noted that many investors had high regard for WCY because its
report provided clear and authentic figures of a country as facts.
The WCY report, he said, often became a referance for investors to know
about a country before they made investments.
"When they look at these figures, I am sure they will have confidence in
Malaysia which has high quality to become a more competitive country and has
proven that it is more capable than other countries," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after opening the 2010 Smart Entrepreneur
Exposition organised jointly by his ministry and Johor Corporation at Persada
Convention Centre here.
Present was Johor Corporation President and Chief Executive Muhammad
Ali Hashim.
Mukhriz said this achievement was very good because last year Malaysia was
in the 18th position.
When asked about the impact of economic crisis in Europe on foreign direct
investment (FDI) from those countries for Malaysia, he said the impact was
small.
The reason was that Malaysia had a buffer following its close relations with
China, the country's biggest trade partner since the first quarter of this year.
"We may find FDI from Europe quite slow but investment from China can
overcome it while other traditional markets like United States, Japan, South
Korea and Taiwan are still there -- though it has fallen a bit, it is still
encouraging."
He said big investments were expected to continue from China, the ministry's
main target besides other important markets.
On the Qatar Investment Authority's decision to invest US$5 billion (RM16
billion) in Malaysia, Mukhriz said that country saw Malaysia on a higher plane
especially in the halal industry.
