GOPIO MALAYSIA TO SCOUT FOR BUSINESS PROSPECTS IN POST-CIVIL WAR SRI LANKA
KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian chapter of the Global
Organisation for People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) will lead an expected
150-member delegation next month to scout for potential business opportunities
in the post-civil war Sri Lanka.
It has arranged for a four-day investment conference in Colombo from June 17 to
20 in partnership with the Sri Lanka High Commission here.
GOPIO Malaysia President Selvarajoo Sundram said the group will comprise some
100 GOPIO members while the rest will be from the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of
Commerce Malaysia and National SME Council (Nasmec).
This is the first time the Malaysia GOPIO is bringing a strong delegation to Sri
Lanka due to the great potential of the post-civil war situation which promises
to be a strong growth area in the Indian sub-continent.
"The conference will provide a platform for Malaysian companies to explore and
introduce their businesses to their Sri Lankan counterparts and even look into
the possibility of joint-venture projects," Selvarajoo told Bernama.
Sectors of interest to the Malaysian entrepreneurs are infrastructure, trade,
tourism, hospitality, tertiary education, tea export, apparel, textile, rice
production and agriculture products especially herbal products.
The investment conference will include an economic seminar, business
match-making and a networking dinner.
Selvarajoo said the participation of the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber and Nasmec
was to showcase the 1Malaysia concept.
GOPIO Malaysia, registered in 1996, currently has 1,200 members, mainly
businessmen, professionals and academicians.
