By: Ageng Wibowo
Jakarta, May 23, (ANTARA) - Ainun was known all her life as a faithful and loving wife who kept her husband and children in good condition. She was also known for her nice-going personality and generous smile during her short period as Indonesia's first lady in 1998 and 1999.
In a 1999 charity event at Al-Ikhlas Mosque in Jakarta when she was first lady, she did not hesitate to kneel down along with all the teachers, students and the mosque caretakers.
At other times, she helped a journalist who had difficulty interviewing her husband by taking the tape recorder off his hand moving it closer to the interviewee's mouth.
"Look, Mrs. Habibie is interviewing her husband," said the impressed Nina Tandjung, wife of former Indonesian biggest ruling political party, Golongan Karya (Golkar) leader, Akbar Tandjung.
She said that the generous act of Ainun has made a good impression on many people, until today.
It is not surprising that many domestic and foreign prayers and sympathizers came to Habibie's family when the news that the former first lady was ill broke.
During her critical condition in a Munich hospital, she was under the supervision of the hospital's director Prof. Dr. Gerhard Steinbeck, a senior cardiologist.
Mrs. Ainun died after two months of intensive care for surgical removal of nine tumors which she had for a period of time at the Munich hospital since March 24, 2010, and has undergone nine tumor removal surgeries of her lungs, with four main surgeries and the rest exploratory operations.
Several hours before she passed away, the life support equipment attached to Mrs. Ainun's body had been removed as she started deteriorating.
Mrs Ainun (72) passed away at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat, Klinikum Gro `hadern, Munich, Germany, on Saturday at 5.30 pm local time.
Ali Ngabalin, a former legislator who stayed in contact with former president Habibie said "Mr. Habibie told me about his wife's death at 10.48 pm Indonesia time and asked for an apology for all her mistakes, and for prayers for the bereaved family."
Dr. Hasri Ainun Habibie was the fourth child of eight children of H family of the late Mohammad Besari. She was born in Semarang, Central Java, in August 11, 1937. Hasri Ainun means "beautiful eyes".
She studied at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta and was a physician at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Central Jakarta.
Ainun tied the knot with Bacharuddin Jusuf (BJ) Habibie on May 12, 1962, and blessed with two children Ilham Akbar and Thareq Kemal.
Earlier, a Presidential Advisory Council member, Ginanjar Kartasasmita, who visited Ainun at the Munich hospital said that she was ill for a relatively long time, and did not affect her activities too significantly, but in March she felt pain in her abdomen. A tumor was detected after a medical examination then she was immediately admitted to a local hospital.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had also instructed the State Secretariat to assist the flying home Mrs. Ainun's remains to Indonesia where she would be buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery, Jakarta.
