Mohammed bin Zayed visits Doosan Heavy Industries, Shin Kori3 facilities
Doosan, South Korea - May 27, 2010 (WAM)- General H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, currently on a visit to South Korea, yesterday toured the facilities of Doosan Heavy Industries (DHI) in the city of Dooasn.
Sheikh Mohammed and his accompanying delegation were received by Geewon Park, DHI's President '&' Chief Executive Officer and Chairman YS Park.
Sheikh Mohammed toured the exhibition which is dedicated to displaying the company's projects and operations such as building nuclear plants, water plants, power plants and containers. He also visited the casting '&' forging division, which is one of the leading material suppliers in the world. He also stopped at the generators and engines workshop and production lines.
Sheikh Mohammed said he was impressed with the progress made by the Korean heavy industries and the quality of DHI's products. He expressed the hope that the UAE-Korean partnership in the nuclear fields will represent a start of a long-term relation in the peaceful nuclear energy.
He noted that UAE's interest in the use of peaceful nuclear energy emanated from national and developmental consideration and was based on the country's vision for the future. "There is a growing need for safe and reliable sources of alternative and clean energy that will meet the increasing requirements for development and serve the rapid population and urban growth," he said. He indicated that the UAE was pressing ahead with its peaceful nuclear programme, given its promising prospects that are poised to boost the comprehensive development drive.
The CEO of DHI expressed pleasure over the visit of Sheikh Mohammed to the company. He described UAE's decision to adopt cleaner and cost effective power generation from nuclear plants as a "strategic decision that will meet the growing demand for power. Doosan Heavy Industries is ready to lend its technical expertise to any project that aims to provide environmentally-safe power generation." Sheikh Mohammed's next stop was Shin Kori nuclear complex, which contains a number of nuclear plants including the Shin Kori Unit 3, now under construction. The 3rd generation Unit will be completed by 2012 and the UAE's nuclear plant will be modelled after it.
Upon his arrival at the plant, Sheikh Mohammed was greeted by a number of senior officials, including S.S. Kim, Chairman of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Jong Kim, CEO of the Korean Nuclear Energy Company and Joong Kyum Kim, President '&' CEO of Hayundai Engineering '&' Construction.
Sheikh Mohammed toured the plant's control room, turbines chamber and steam and electricity engines. He was briefed about the technologies being used there, designs and safety methods.
