NAJIB DIRECTS FOREIGN MINISTRY PUTRA TO SAVE MALAYSIAN VOLUNTEERS
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib
Tun Razak said Tuesday he has instructed Wisma Putra (Ministry of Foreign
Affairs) to save the Malaysian volunteers on board the ship carrying
humanitarian aid to Gaza which was attacked by Israel Monday.
He said that in view that there was no communication with the parties
involved, Malaysia would get the help of the United Nations and third countries.
"I have asked Wisma Putra to strive to save our volunteers. We have
difficulty getting information...there's no communication with the parties
involved," he told a news conference here.
Eleven Malaysians, including a journalist and a cameraman from Astro Awani,
were reported to be on board the Turkish ship, Mavi Marmara, which was attacked
by Israeli forces off the Gaza coast Monday morning. At least 10 people were
reported killed in the attack.
So far the fate of the Malaysians is not known.
According to a foreign news agency report, Israel had detained 480
pro-Palestinian activitists captured in its deadly commando raid on the ship and
would expel 48 others.
Asked what UN channel would be used, Najib said Malaysia had a permanent
representative in the world body.
"We also have friends (other countries) and ties with international
intelligence bodies to try and get information (on the fate of the Malaysians),"
he said.
He said Kuala Lumpur would also table a motion on the violations and
violence committed by Tel Aviv to the UN Security Council.
"We are looking at how we can take action against Israel for violating human
rights and international laws," he said.
Asked whether Malaysia would boycott goods from the United States, which is
Israel's main ally, as well as Israeli goods, Najib said a boycott would have no
effect.
The question of a boycott did not arise because Malaysia did not import
goods from Israel as it had no diplomatic relations with that country, he said.
He also hoped that the families of the Malaysians involved in the incident
would be strong in facing this test.
"We will try our best to get the information as soon as possible," he added.
