News Focus: RI TO URGE FIRM UN ACTION AGAINST ISRAEL

By Eliswan Azly

Jakarta, June 26 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will urge the United Nations to take firm action against Israel over Monday's attack on the Mv Mavi Marmara, a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid ship in international waters, that has left 19 volunteers dead and 30 others injured.

For the purpose, Indonesia had to garner more international support as this predominantly Muslim country only wants Israel to stop constructing new buildings on Palestinian land and all kinds of military aggression into Gaza that might cloud the prospect of peace in the Middle East, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

"Indonesia will also call on other countries to ask Israel to stop launching all kinds of military attacks on Palestinian land and prefer to get back to the negotiation table in the context of giving independence to the Palestinian people. This is exactly the diplomacy Indonesia has to implement at the global level," he said.

Reiterating what he had conveyed to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during the latter's visit to Jakarta last week, Yudhoyono declared Indonesia's readiness to be more actively involved in negotiations for the independence of Palestine.

If the negotiations later lead to a process toward Palestinian independence, Yudhoyono said, Indonesia was ready to send peace keeping troops under the auspices of the United Nations like it had done in the case of Lebanon.
The president in his statement also appealed to world leaders including the UN Secretary General to take serious action against Israel following the violation of human rights that country had committed.

In addition, Indonesia was also proposing the establishment of an independent and credible international fact-finding team in Geneva to investigate Israel's brutal attack on volunteers aboard the MV Mavi Marmara.

According to the Indonesian representative office to the United Nations, WTO and other organizations in Geneve, Switzerland, the Israeli attack would be brought up for discussion at the 14th session of the UN Human Rights Commission (UNHRC).

Indonesia had strongly condemned the Israeli violence which killed around 19 volunteers and wounded 50 others, deputy chief of the Indonesian representative office in Geneva Dian Triansyah Djani said.

The group of countries in the Organization of the Islamic Conference had given a mandate to Indonesia together with Egypt in their capacity as vice presidents of the UN Human Rights Commission to raise the issue at the 14th session of UNHRC.

Through persuasive approaches, Indonesia as vice president of UNHRC together with Egypt had succeeded in convincing Belgium, Slovenia, Chile, Egypt and Indonesia to discuss brutal Israeli attack.

During the session, Ambassador Djani confirmed that the tragic incident which happened on international waters was a form of Israeli ignorance of human rights and international law on humanity.

"Indonesia was concerned over the arrest of some humanitarian activists by Israel including Indonesian nationals which constitutes a violation of human rights and insists that Israel free all of the volunteers," he said.

In the meantime, the Israeli troops` brutal attack on voluntary workers also inspired many circles in Indonesia to urge the United Nations (UN) to immediately investigate the bloody tragedy.

NU General Chairman Said Aqil Siroj said on Tuesday whatever the reasons, the Israeli action could not be justified and had hurt the peace efforts of various parties in the world.

"PBNU (NU executive board) has from the beginning been against the use of violence for settling problems. This will certainly damage the peace efforts," he said.

Therefore, PBNU stated that the Israeli action this time should not be ignored. The United Nations should immediately investigate this inhuman bloody tragedy by imposing more severe sanctions on Israel.

If the UN ignored this, he was afraid there would be a black lash in the form of terrorist actions in the future in other parts of the world.

According to him, his organization supported the government`s efforts as the world`s largest Muslim populated country to take part in efforts to settle the tragedy.

Moreover, the fate of 12 Indonesian citizens who participated in the mission was not yet known until now, he said.

"As a country with the world`s largest Muslim population we support the government`s efforts in participating in seeking peace in the Gaza Strip," he said.

The international community had to impose concrete sanction on Israel over its military action against the humanitarian workers, a lawmaker said.

"I think, Israel`s action against the unarmed peace convoy was reckless, and will no doubt come into the international spotlight because it has led to casualties although their number has yet to be confirmed," House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I member I Al Muzzammil Yusuf said.

"The Israeli forces' attack on the ship carrying humanitarian aid is evidence of their violent character. It was an attack not only on Muslims, but on the world community also. And the world must take a stance. The governments and parliaments of all countries must condemn Israel`s action," he said.

"The world needs to impose concrete sanctions on Israel, Petitions won`t make a difference, and the Indonesian government should also make efforts together with the world community to have Israel punished," he said.

Muzamil who is also coordinator of the Indonesian Parliamentary Caucus for Pelestine added the incident was also a test case for US President Barack Obama.

Obama should be unbiased in seeing the tragedy and he was also called to urge the UN to investigate the attack in hope that such a world peace could be maintained, he said.

Obama`s efforts to reach out to the Islamic world could be considered to have failed if his government did not defend humanitarian and human rights after Israel`s arrogant attack.

Muzzamil also said the Egyptian government would also be following a bad diplomatic path if it failed to open its border with Gaza Stripe for the transportation of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Earlier the Indonesian government was reported to have urged the United Nations to fulfill its obligations by taking Israel to account over its attack on volunteers aboard the ill-fated ship.
