Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ Head of the Cabinet Secretariat of the Government Ch.Khurelbaatar submitted Thursday to the Speaker D.Demberel draft laws on ratifying the Singapore Treaty on the Law of Trademarks and on ratifying the Protocol on altering the agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).
The draft amendment to the Singapore Treaty on the Law of Trademarks was adopted at a diplomatic conference held March 13-28, 2006 in Singapore. The main purpose of the treaty is to make some matters on registration process of national and regional trademarks quicker and more understandable by facilitating it, and to create an international flexible structure focusing on coordinating activities like registration of trademarks.
The cabinet backed Mongolia's joining the treaty on February 24 after having consulted it with the parliamentary Standing committee on security and foreign policy.
Due to joining the Marrakech Agreement on establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1997, Mongolia has joined the TRIPS agreement. The WTO's General Council approved a protocol on alteration of the TRIPS agreement in 2005.
The matter on joining the protocol on alteration of the TRIPS agreement was backed at a cabinet meeting held July of 2009. Then, the parliamentary Standing committee on security and foreign policy backed this issue.
