MALAYSIAN PM'S WIFE INVITES BRIGHT LAOTIAN STUDENTS TO ATTEND SUMMER CAMP
From Ahmad Kamil Tahir
VIENTIANE, June 3 (Bernama) -- Rosmah Mansor, wife of the
Malaysian prime minister, Thursday extended an invitation for bright students in
Laos to attend the second "Permata Pintar" (Brilliant Jewel) summer camp to be
held in December in Malaysia.
Permata Pintar Negara (PPN) (National Brilliant Jewel) is an organisation
designed to search for the gifted children from all over Malaysia.
She said these students would have to undergo a test which would determine
whether they could follow the programme, set by the Johns Hopkins University.
"We will make the offer but it is up to them whether they can come up with
the suitable candidates," she told Malaysian journalists, here.
Rosmah, who is accompanying Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on a
visit to Laos, visited the University of Laos and a kindergarten as well as a
school for bright students at the varsity campus here under a separate
itinerary.
She said the administrators of the university and the school said at a
meeting that they still required much educational aid and development.
She said they expressed the hope of being able to learn the latest
educational techniques from more progressive countries.
Rosmah, who is Permata Negara patron, said she explained to them the
Permata Negara programme where children aged four attend pre-school and follow
lessons outlined in a syllabus.
"I also explained to them that we have several programmes for youth," she
said.
Rosmah had said in Malaysia earlier this year that the Permata Pintar
programme expected to select about 1,000 students for the UKM (Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia)(National University of Malaysia) summer camp at year-end.
"We will invite 10 bright students from other countries for the UKM summer
camp. Students aged nine to 15 years are urged to seize this opportunity," she
had said.
