Nukaga leaves for Middle East visit to draw oil money to Japan

TOKYO, July 16 Kyodo - Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga left on Tuesday for a weeklong trip to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Uzbekistan aiming to attract investment to Japan from the resource-rich countries in the Middle East.

Nukaga was accompanied by executives of major Japanese financial institutions so as to deepen financial ties between Japan and the Middle Eastern countries.

''I will proactively seek investment to Japan from the Middle Eastern countries that have ample funds earned by surges in oil prices,'' Nukaga said at a press conference before departing for the trip through next Monday.

Nukaga is traveling with executives of Mizuho Corporate Bank, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Nomura Asset Management Co. and Daiwa Securities Co.

Referring to continued surges in crude prices, Nukaga said at the news conference, ''I'd like to candidly exchange views on supply conditions and market movements of natural resources with influential people in those resource-producing countries.''
