UNWG Geneva honours Sheikha Fatima

Geneva - June 9, 2010 (WAM)- H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Maternity '&' Childhood was named as guest of honour during the United Nations Women's Guild (UNWG) annual lunch, hosted here today.
The selection of Sheikha Fatima as the guest of honour was made in recognition of her contributions in the humanitarian fields and her efforts in the welfare of mothers and children both locally and internationally.
Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN European Headquarters in Geneva, delivered a speech during the lunch in which he conveyed Sheikha Fatima's greetings to UNWG members.
Al Zaabi underlined achievements of the UAE women, thanks to the country's wise human development policies. "UAE women enjoy equality with men in every aspect of life. Women are granted all constitutional rights including the right to work, to benefit from social security, to own, to run businesses, to get education and healthcare and to get equal pay," he added.
He also said that UAE women represent 66 per cent of workforce at the public sector, of which 30 per cent jobs are leading posts. They also constitute 15 per cent of the teaching staff of the UAE University and represent 60 per cent of the technical professions, which include medicine, teaching, pharmacy and nursing. The women also joined the UAE Armed Forces, police and Customs.
UAE has four women ministers and four ambassadors. As for women's contribution to the political sphere, 22.5 per cent of the Federal National Council (FNC) members are women.
The UAE has signed all international treaties on protecting the rights of women. Among these are the Child Protection Convention (1997), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, CEDAW, (2004).
Only four years after the creation of the UAE, General Women's Union (GWU) was established to shoulder the responsibility of laying out plans and strategies to empower women in various areas. It has been working on well-prepared programmes and activities as part of its efforts to implement the national strategy for promoting the status of women as well as empowering them in the fields of education, health, the economy, media, politics, social work, the environment and the implementation of legislation.
The GWU has also been playing an active role in the process of political qualification and empowerment through encouraging political participation by women at all levels. In this regard, the Union has launched a project to strengthen the performance of female parliamentarians through training courses, workshops, symposia and dialogues. These have all improved the skills of women leaders and have prepared them for the political arena.
The GWU has gained prestige by taking an active part in both Arab and international activities and organizations, including the Arab Women's Organisation.
Al Zaabi referred to the huge achievements made by the UAE in different spheres, saying the country was ranked first in MENA region and 16th worldwide in the Global Enabling Trade Report for 2010, released by the World Economic Forum.
"The establishment of the FDF, GWU and EWAA Centres, is a living proof of the UAE's achievements in the care of women and children.
Sara Shuhail, Executive Director of EWAA Centres, highlighted in her speech Sheikha Fatima's role in the welfare of women and children as she patronised the opening of EWAA centres for women and children who are victims of the crime of human trafficking to provide a safe shelter, health and psychological care, and social support for those victims within the country. The centres established through a resolution by H.H Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region. She hailed Sheikha Fatima's initiative of establishing a fund for the protection and assistance of refugee woman and children. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
