MALAYSIA CONGRATULATES NEW PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has congratulated Benigno Aquino Jr
III over his proclamation as the new president-elect of the Philippines.

In a congratulatory message to Aquino, Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said
Malaysia was confident that bilateral relations with the Philippines would
thrive and prosper in all fields of mutual interest.

"Malaysia also looks foward to working closely with the Republic of the
Philippines towards achieving the common vision of stable and prosperous Asean,"
he said in a statement.

Aquino, 50, will take his oath as the country's 15th president on June 30,
succeeding Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who had ruled the country for nine years.

The official congressional count ended Tuesday, showing Aquino defeating his
eight rivals by securing more than 15 million votes.

Aquino is a son of former president Corazon Aquino and the country's revered
democracy icon - Benigno Aquino Jr.
