MALAYSIA NEEDS TO IMPROVE SUPPLY OF SKILLED WORKFORCE, SAYS HITACHI MD
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11(Bernama) -- Malaysia needs to improve the supply of
skilled, professional, value-focused workers, and provide truly market relevant
skills for the existing workforce.
In a statement here Thursday, managing director of Hitachi Data Systems
Malaysia, Johnson Khoo, said around the region, Indonesia and the Philippines
were intensifying their efforts in this area, and it was vital for the country
to boost its efforts to build quality human capital.
"Overall, we applaud the 10th Malaysia Plan’s (10MP) continued emphasis on
enhancing human capital in the public and private sectors," he said.
Khoo was commenting on the 10MP which was tabled by Prime Minister Najib Razak
in Parliament here Thursday.
He said irrespective of whether the economy was government- or private
sector-driven, it was the quality of the human capital that would determine if
the country could meet its aspirations of achieving a high-value and high-income
economy by 2020.
Khoo hailed the announcement of a Competition Law as it would provide a
regulatory framework against market manipulation and cartel practices that may
affect market efficiency.
"This augurs well for the future as it will stimulate competition and encourage
investments into the economy," he said.
Meanwhile, managing director of Cisco Malaysia, Anne Abraham, said the measures
announced in 10MP and developments for the National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs)
represented comprehensive initiatives that would open doors for innovative
collaborations between the government, business entities and citizens.
She said Cisco recognised the government's commitment to retain skilled workers,
and improve the quality of students as well as enhancing their employability.
"While training and certification is an on-going imperative, there is also a
need for continued investment to address the skills gap between academia and the
industry, both at the tertiary and professional levels," she said.
