VENUES, INFRASTRUCTURE READY FOR COMMONWEALTH GAMES
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- The venues and infrastructure for the 19th Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 are ready, and have received international recognition, its organising committee joint director-general T. S. Darbani said Friday.
"There are still one or two projects (uncompleted) but even those should be
ready by July," he said. The Games will be held from Oct 3-14.
India hopes the Games will showcase its rising economic power, with two
million tourists expected in New Delhi. About 10,000 athletes representing 54
Commonwealth member states will participate.
The infrastructural projects for the Game have taken New Delhi to between
seven and eight years ahead, in terms of progress, Darbani told a function to
mark the arrival of the Queen's Baton in Malaysia for the Games.
The Queen's Baton for the Games is currently on a journey across various
Commonwealth nations.
As the Delhi Games will be the first 'green' event, there will be a
simultaneous tree-planting exercise in New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur and United
Kingdom Saturday.
