14-yr-old boy arrested for hijacking bus

NAGOYA, July 17 Kyodo - A 14-year-old boy was arrested in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, on the Tomei Expressway after hijacking a Tokyo-bound intercity bus from Nagoya for more than an hour Wednesday and holding the driver at knifepoint, police said.

The boy, a second-year junior high school student from Ube, Yamaguchi
Prefecture, said ''I wanted to cause trouble to my parents because I was
scolded by them'' and ''I wanted to cause a great sensation'' through the
incident, in which none of the 10 passengers or the driver was injured, they
said.

Officials of the Ube city education board said the boy, whose name is being
withheld because he is a minor, had been in some trouble with a female student
at the school and had been cautioned by the school over the matter.

The police learned of the incident when JR Tokai Bus Co., the operator of the
double-decker bus, called them at around 12:50 p.m. to say that a boy was
threatening the driver with a knife, quoting a call from one of its employees
who happened to be aboard the vehicle as a passenger, according to the police.
Later at around 1:10 p.m. the boy himself called the police by cellphone and
said ''I've hijacked a bus,'' they said.
The boy was allegedly holding a fruit knife with a 10-centimeter blade to the
driver's neck. He later told the police he had bought the knife at a 100-yen
shop, they said.
After the Aichi police located the bus, patrol cars surrounded it and led it to
the expressway's Miai parking area in Okazaki and made it stop there.
At the parking area, police officers persuaded the teen to release the
passengers and the 39-year-old driver, and then arrested him at the scene at
around 2 p.m. for violation of the weapons control law and confinement.
The boy, who was also carrying another knife with a 12-cm blade, did not appear
agitated, according to the police.
He had boarded the bus at its starting point in Nagoya at around noon, they
said. The bus was scheduled to arrive in Tokyo around 6 p.m.
According to JR Tokai Bus, the 42-year-old male employee happened to be on the
lower deck of the bus and saw the boy coming down from the upper deck,
approaching the driver with a knife in his right hand.
The employee called JR Tokai Bus on his cellphone and quietly asked the company
to call the police, the bus operator said.
The boy lives with his 42-year-old father, 41-year-old mother and 12-year-old
sister.
He left home in Ube early Tuesday morning, prompting his family to ask police
to search for him later in the day.
