EGYPT SHOULD NOT BE SUBSERVIENT TO ISRAEL, SAYS TUN DR MAHATHIR

KUALA TERENGGANU (Malaysia), June 14 (Bernama) -- Egypt has been urged not to be too subservient to Israel by imposing strict checks on world aid to the Palestinians at the Rafah border.

Perdana Global Peace Organisation (PGPO) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad
said Israel as usual would find various ways to ensure that the much needed aid
would arrive late or did not reach the people of Palestine.

"Although the Rafah border gate is open, Israel would pressure Egypt to
check strictly the aid on grounds that arms are being included in the aid
shipment whereas we have ensured that no arms are being sent.

"This is just a trick by Israel. I hope the Egyptian government will not
cooperate with Israel," he told reporters, here Monday.

The former prime minister said the pressure imposed by Israel was a subtle
way of committing genocide on the people of Palestine.

"When they don't get sufficient food, medicines and do not have proper life,
and forced to live in tents, during the cold weather, the old and poor will die
because of the cold," he said.

He said although the attempt by the volunteers to send humanitarian aid was
unsuccessful, the incident had opened the eyes of the international community to
the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime.

"The world now knows that the Israeli regime is not only prepared to kill
their enemies, namely the Palestinians, but also willing to kill friends of the
Palestinians," he said.

Dr Mahathir had earlier given a speech for more than an hour at the
gathering dubbed 'Melayu Bangkit' (Malays, Rise Up), organised by a Malay
non-governmental organisation (NGO), 'Gerakan Kebangkitan Rakyat' (Gertak) at
the Stadium Negeri, here.

Also present at the function were Terengganu Chief Minister Ahmad Said
and Gertak chairman, Razali Idris as well as more than 2,000 representatives of
NGOs.
