TELCOS ABIDE BY RADIATION SAFETY LEVEL
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- A study and monitoring carried out by the
government and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)
found no telecommunication service provider violating the radiation exposure
limit.
Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Joseph Salang
said the level of radiation emission generated by telecommunication towers or
transmitters in the country was on an average 200 times lower than the level of
human exposure allowed.
"Standards used for radio frequency radiation (RFF) and electromagnetic
field (EMF) from telecommunication towers are at a level permitted for human
exposure.
"We adopted the standards set by the International Commission on
Non-Ionising Radiation Protection which is recognised by the World Health
Organisation (WHO).
"According to the commission guidelines, the level of human exposure allowed
is from 45.7 volts per metre at 800 megahertz to 75 volts per metre at 2,150
megahertz," he said to a question from Jeff Ooi, a member of parliament when
winding up debate in the House of Representatives here Tuesday.
Casting aspersion on rules and regulations pertaining to human exposure to
the RFF and EMF in the country, Ooi said several non-governmental organisations
claimed that the government did not comply with current standards and rules and
they posed a cancer threat to the public.
Salang said in an effort to curtail misinformation on the RFF and EMF
emissions by certain quarters, the MCMC conducted seminars and education
campaign nationwide with the cooperation of the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, the
Health Ministry, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten).
The efforts, which have shown positive impact, will be continued, adding
that, if certain quarters continued to create fear among the people and cause
public disorder by giving a wrong picture of the situation, they could be
charged under the Penal Code or the Sedition 1984.
The sitting continues Wednesday.
