STUDENTS IN MIDDLE EAST BEING MONITORED TO PREVENT INVOLVEMENT WITH MILITANT ACTIVITIES
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian students in the Middle East are
being monitored to prevent them from getting involved with militant activities,
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom said.
He said the Islamic Affairs Department, Higher Education Ministry, Foreign
Ministry and Youth and Sports Ministry were also involved in addressing the
problem.
"We discussed cooperation on how to monitor the students' activities from
time to time," he told reporters at a media function at the Islamic Art Museum
here Wednesday.
Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein told parliament Tuesday
that Jemaah Islamiah (JI) tried to recruit students in local universities as
members.
Jamil Khir said several officers had been appointed to give briefing on the
real spirit of jihad to 6,000 Malaysian students in Egypt.
On another note, the minister said his division had achieved 11 Key
Performance Indicators (KPI) fixed by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
"We managed to achieve 90 percent of the KPI as of May with only 10 percent
not meeting the target," he added.
The KPI include standardising muslim family laws by amending the Federal
Territory Muslim Family Law Act, implementing 339 wakaf land projects and
reducing the waiting period for haj from 20 years to 10 years.
