Laos hosts GMS Cross-Border Transport Agreement meeting in Laos

VIENTIANE,18 JUNE (KPL) - The Lao People’s Democratic Republic on Thursday has hosted the third meeting of the Joint Committee on the GMS Cross-Border Transport Agreement (CBTA) in Vientiane.
The meeting held to follow up on the implementation of the CBTA since the last meeting had been held in 2007 was chaired by Mr. Sommath Pholsena, Minister of Public Works and Transport was attended by six countries along the Mekong river including Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Thailand and Myanmar.
It heard reports on the status of CBTA implementation, including the progress of exchange traffic rights, implementation of the customs transit system and border procedures.
Participants also agreed on future directions to expedite the full implementation of the agreement as key outcomes of the Senior Officials Meeting of the National Transport Facilitation Committee and its subcommittee meetings.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is a lead supporter of the GMS Economic Cooperation Programme, which is being developed on the multiple platforms of strengthening transport, trade and tourism links, boosting competition, improving access to energy and social services, increasing security, and protecting the environment.
The programme now targets transforming GMS transport corridors into economic corridors by removing or reducing barriers to the flow of goods and people. To meet the challenges of this process, GMS ministers are committed to simplifying procedures to reduce time spent on border crossings.
This includes applying a national single window inspection through close collaboration with transport, customs, immigration, quarantine, and other relevant border management authorities within each country and across the sub-region.
