ASEAN HERITAGE PARK OFFICIALS TO MEET IN BRUNEI
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- Nature park officials from Malaysia are
expected to meet their Asean counterparts at the Third Asean Heritage Parks
Conference to be held in Brunei from June 30 to July 1.
An Asean Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) statement here says the conference,
to be hosted by Brunei's Department of Environment, Park and Recreation, will
discuss ways to effectively manage and conserve the nature parks and determine
common areas of cooperation among member states.
Malaysia has three Asean heritage parks -- Gunung Mulu National Park (in the
east Malaysian state of Sarawak) Kinabalu National Park (in the east Malaysian
state of Sabah), and Taman Negara National Park (in the state of Pahang) --
which are of high conservation importance and preserve a spectrum of
representative ecosystems of the Asean region.
Southeast Asia has 28 Asean heritage parks -- 24 terrestrial, two marine and
two wetland -- which are home to many of the world's most enigmatic species.
The three-day conference will find ways to enhance the regional action plan
and strategies for the conservation of Asean heritage parks.
