MATRADE RECORDS US$135.1 MLN IN BUSINESS MATCHING AT MIHAS 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) recorded US$135.1 million worth of business matchings on the first day of the programme held in conjunction with the 7th International Halal Showcase (MIHAS 2010), which begins Wednesday.
The two-day business matching session is a platform for Malaysian exporters
to meet international buyers, establish business connections and enhance their
overseas presence in a cost effective way.
MATRADE's Chief Executive Officer Noharuddin Nordin said the business
matchings clinched was evidence that the halal trade was definitely gaining
importance among international players.
"It is very encouraging to see the volume of sales and dealings taking place
in one day. We hope to see more business matchings today," he said at the MIHAS
2010 pre-event media briefing here Tuesday.
Of the total recorded on Monday, Noharuddin said immediate sales accounted
for US$10.5 million while US$124.6 million worth of sales were under
negotiation.
Noharuddin said more than 381 foreign companies, from 54 countries, and over
900 Malaysian companies are participating in the two-day business matching
programme.
"This global event attracted new comers from Albania, Belgium, Gambia, Hong
Kong and Italy.
"Recognising the extensive spectrum MIHAS offers in the halal business, this
event has continuously expanded in keeping with the country's commitment to
establish Malaysia as an international halal hub," he said.
MATRADE is optimistic sales clinched at MIHAS 2010 would be 10 per cent
higher than the RM224.6 million (US$68.06 millION) worth of deals recorded last
year.
The five-day halal showcase, to be offitiated by Prime Minister Najib Razak,
has attracted 527 companies, out of which 163 are foreign participants.
