MIHAS AN IMPORTANT PLATFORM FOR ASEAN COUNTRIES TO VENTURE INTO HALAL INDUSTRY
By Nor Baizura Basri
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- The 7th Malaysia International Halal
Showcase 2010 (Mihas 2010) which begins Wednesday, is an important platform for
Asean countries, especially in efforts to penetrate the global halal market.
Mihas Chief Executive Officer Mohd Shukri Abdullah said there was an
increase in participation this year from among Asean countries, especially
Singapore.
"We want Mihas to be the Asean platform and one day, the global stage. We
want to focus on our neighbours. They want Mihas in particular to assist in
marketing their halal products globally," he told Bernama recently.
The seventh edition of Mihas will see the participation of 169 foreign
companies from 31 countries with the latest entrants being Italy, Romania and
Albania.
The event will also see the participation of 334 Malaysian companies.
Mohd Shukri said there was a 68 per cent permanent participation by
companies which had previously featured in Mihas.
This he added, showed that Mihas continued to receive response from
overseas, with countries beginning to realise the huge potential of the halal
industry.
"With the presence of a platform such as Mihas, the World Halal Forum and
the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), I feel our dream to spearhead
the global halal hub is getting closer," said Mohd Shukri.
He said this is also evident from how a number of other countries had
followed Malaysia's lead in organising halal exhibitions of their own to tap
into the new opportunities offered by this industry.
Mihas 2010, to be held over five days, will also witness the largest
delegations from China and Iran in respect of participation.
Mohd Shukri said the first three days of Mihas is especially for
entrepreneurs and exhibitors to network. The last two days of the event is open
to the public to view halal products in the market.
To make it easy for the public, a free bus service is being provided at
various strategic locations in Kuala Lumpur at a 35-minute interval.
