VIETNAM TO REPRESENT ASEAN AT G-20 TORONTO SUMMIT

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Asean chair Vietnam will join the Group of Twenty (G-20) Toronto Summit this weekend to discuss the global economic and financial crisis.

The Asean Secretariat said in a statement that the Toronto Summit would also
take stock of the implementation of commitments from the previous summits.

The agenda this time around includes the development of coordinated exit
strategies while ensuring sustainable and balanced growth and evaluation of
progress on financial sector reform.

Leaders at the Summit will also review the steps taken by international
financial institutions to enhance their governance and strengthen their lending
capacities, as well as an assessment of global trade and growth.

The Asean delegation will also include its Secretary-General Dr Surin
Pitsuwan.

"This is another sign of recognition from the global community of Asean's
potential and success as a regional organisation," Surin said of the
invitation extended to Vietnam in May by Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper
to join the prestigious meeting.

"It also shows support for Asean's vision of a community," he added.

At the 15th Asean Summit in 2009, the 10 leaders agreed that the Asean chair
and the grouping's secretary-general should be invited to participate in G-20
summits so that Asean could present its collective views and ensure close
coordination between its regional approaches and the global approach undertaken
by the G-20.

While Canada is the chair of the first G-20 Summit for 2010, South Korea
will play host to the second summit of the year in November.

The G-20 was formally established in 1999 to bring together major
industrialised and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global
economy.

The G-20 members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France,
Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia,
South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and the European Union.
