M`SIA HAS POTENTIAL TO BECOME ISLAMIC FASHION LEADER, SAYS ROSMAH

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is in a unique position to lead the
global awakening for Islamic fashion, said the prime minister's wife, Rosmah
Mansor.

She said, Malaysia boasted location, tradition and gifted designers who were
able to infuse modern and traditional styles.

"Furthermore, Malaysia is already a recognised model for the Muslim world,
including a well-known halal hub for various products," she said at a media
conference on the latest shows to be undertaken by the Islamic Fashion Festival
(IFF).

Dubbed the IFF Journey, the event will showcase in Jakarta at the end of the
month and in Monte Carlo in August. The IFF Journey which was started four years
ago, has staged shows in Abu Dhabi and New York, so far this year.

Rosmah, who is also IFF patron, said Islamic fashion was becoming a
lucrative business as Muslim women were always looking for exciting new things to
wear and, at the same time, which allowed them to meet religious requirements.

"It was reported that the current market for Islamic-inspired fashion was
estimated to be worth more than US$96 billion a year," she said.

A research undertaken by the French Fashion University Esmod in Dubai has found
that over half of the world's 1.6 billion Muslim population spent more than
US$120 per capita monthly on fashion and accessories.

"It is also fascinating to note that Arabia-style outfits remain in high demand
due to the robust economies of key markets such as the United Arab Emirates,
with some outfits fetching as much as US$10,000," said Rosmah.

She urged Malaysian designers to work hard, via the IFF, to promote
interesting and colourful fashions to the world.

IFF founder and chairman Raja Rezza Shah said the next showcase would be held in
Jakarta on June 29 and 30, before moving to Monte Carlo from Aug 7 to 9.

The theme for Jakarta's showcase is 'Cita Nusantara', which will feature
creative Islamic designs using various traditional-styled fabrics with Malaysian
and Indonesian batik, as well as songket.

"Among the top designers taking part in the showcase are our very own Tom Abang
Saufi and Melinda Looi, and Indonesians Ghea Panggabean, Milo and Samuel
Wattimena," said Raja Rezza.

The final showcase for this year will be in Kuala Lumpur in November, featuring
among others, Tom and Looi and several other designers.
