UAE to co-host world's first clean energy ministerial meeting
Abu Dhabi, June 27, 2010 (WAM)- The United Arab Emirates (UAE), together with the United States, will co-host the Preparatory Meeting for the world's first Clean Energy Ministerial in Abu Dhabi, on 28-29 June 2010.
The Clean Energy Ministerial, which will be held in Washington, D.C., on 19-20 July, will bring together more than 20 countries to collaborate on policies and programs that accelerate the world's transition to clean energy technologies. Participating governments include the 17 countries of the Major Economies Forum (MEF) on Energy and Climate (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States) as well as Belgium (as EU President), Denmark, Norway, Spain and Sweden.
The UAE, home to the Masdar Initiative and the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will also participate at the Ministerial due to its ongoing commitment and leadership in advancing low-carbon and climate-friendly technologies.
The Preparatory Meeting will bring together senior officials from participating governments discuss the concrete clean energy initiatives expected to be launched at the Ministerial on a range of key technologies. These initiatives will create jobs, cut greenhouse gas emissions, improve local air quality, enhance energy security and fight energy poverty around the world.
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar and UAE Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change, said: "The UAE sees this as another crucial step in our vision towards engaging actively in the global conversation on energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate change. Over the past four years the UAE has been diligent in ensuring that we play our part in this ongoing debate." "The UAE is proud to be hosting the Preparatory Meeting for the first-ever Clean Energy Ministerial. This is a great opportunity to engage and collaborate with like-minded countries on accelerating global clean energy deployment," he added.
The UAE has been playing an increasingly prominent role in the clean energy sphere. The country has been active in international climate negotiations and is the first GCC country to associate with the Copenhagen Accord. As a major global energy player, the UAE is taking a leading role in the development of sustainable energy solutions through initiatives such as Masdar, taking a holistic approach toward developing a knowledge-based clean energy sector in the UAE.
"The UAE's inclusion in this important dialogue is a testament to the vision and foresight of our country's leadership in recognising the importance of mitigating climate change and taking steps to invest in and advance the development of clean technology solutions," Dr. Al Jaber concluded. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
