SEIZED VEHICLES RETURNED TO M'SIA, SAYS DUBAI CONSUL-GENERAL
By Muin Abdul Majid
DUBAI, June 28 (Bernama) -- Twenty-four Malaysian vehicles, seized by the
customs department here enroute to being smuggled into the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) a few years ago, have been handed over to the Malaysian police.
Malaysian consul-general Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin said the vehicles
comprised mostly pick-up trucks and sport utility vehicles.
"The consignment is expected to arrive in Malaysia soon," he told Bernama
Monday.
UAE state media reported that the Dubai customs department was able to
detect the smuggled vehicles before they made it to the UAE auto market, thanks
to highly-skilled inspectors and the use of high-tech scanners.
It said investigations singled out an international group behind the
smuggling attempt.
According to Syed Mohamad Hasrin, the case first came to the attention of
the Malaysian Embassy in Abu Dhabi in 2007. The consulate-general in Dubai was
set up, a year later.
"Only recently, a Dubai customs official came to see me to find out
whether we wanted to dispose off the vehicles here, or return them to Malaysia,"
he said, adding that two Malaysian police officers flew to Dubai after being
informed of the latest development.
Syed Mohamad Hasrin thanked the Dubai customs department, police and the
embassy for their cooperation.
