EFFORTS TO SEEK CONSULAR ACCESS TO MALAYSIAN DETAINED IN CAIRO

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- Wisma Putra (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
will intensify its efforts to seek consular access to a Malaysian, Muhamad
Zulkifli Mohamad Zakaria, 41, who is held in Cairo under the Egyptian Emergency
Law since June 13 .

The most recent consular effort was when Charge d'Affaires of the Malaysian
Embassy in Cairo met Egyptian Deputy Assistant Minister for South East Asean and
Asean Affairs on Tuesday, Wisma Putra said in a statement Wednesday night.

It said the Charge d'Affaires expressed Malaysia's deep concern on Muhamad's
arrest as the embassy had not been granted the consular access to him.

In response to the request, the deputy assistant minister agreed to bring up
the issue to the attention of Egypt Foreign Minister, it added.

Wisma Putra summoned the Charge d'Affaires of the Egyptian Embassy in Kuala
Lumpur last Thursday to express Malaysia's concern on Muhamad's arrest and that
he would be accorded fair treatment.

It said Wisma Putra would inform Muhamad's wife, Nur Hidayah on the
development.

Under the Egyptian Emergency Law, a person could be detained for up to one
month without any formal charges brought against him for alleged involvement in
terrorist activities and trafficking of narcotics.
