MALAYSIAN GOVT CONSIDERING GIVING LOCAL SHIP BUILDER NGV TECH MORE OPPORTUNITIES
KUALA LANGAT (Malaysia), July 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government is
considering the possibility of giving bigger opportunities to local ship
building company, NGV Tech Sdn Bhd, to build new ships needed by the Defence
Ministry, Royal Malaysian Naval Force and other agencies.
Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak Thursday said the move follows NGV
Tech's success in carving for itself a name in the international market of
shipbuilding.
"NGV Tech is one company that can be termed as a success story and which we
can be proud of whether in terms of developing the country's local maritime
industry or in terms of the struggles of a Bumiputera entrepreneur who has
achieved success at global level," he said in his speech in conjunction with his
visit to the dockyard of NGV Tech in Sijangkang here.
Najib said what made him proud, as a prime minister, was the
entrepreneurship quality diplayed by the Executive Chairman of NGV Tech,
Zulkifli Shariff, and NGV Tech which can be an example for other companies and
entrepreneurs.
"With minimum support from the government, the success of NGV Tech came
about not because it secured big contracts from the Malaysian government but
instead NGV Tech proved that it could get contracts worth billions of ringgit
from overseas," he said.
These contracts were secured from developed countries like the United
States, Norway, Holland and from emerging markets like Mesir, India, Brazil and
Nigeria.
"The capability of NGV Tech to compete without any special advantages to the
point of building 227 ships of various kinds is a success story that I believe
can be used as a benchmark for other companies."
Najib also expressed hope that with the government considering giving NGV
Tech the contract of building war ships, it would become a track record for the
company when bidding for larger and more jobs whether they are from foreign
companies or governments.
"I hope NGV Tech will enhance its skills to more higher levels as the
sophistication required for building warships is higher," he said.
Nevertheless, Najib said he had been informed by Zulkifli that NGV Tech was
capable of building more sophisticated ships required by the navy and other
agencies.
One area NGV Tech has already achieved success is in its capacity building
to compete at the global level in line with Malaysia's hope to become a
progressive and successful 21st Century Nation, the prime minister said.
He also said to become globally competitive which will be a factor for
Malaysia's success as a developed nation, there should no longer be dependence
on special quotas from the government.
The ability to compete and achieve in the international arena is the kind of
spirit that must be built and inculcated among Malaysians and NGV Tech is one of
the best examples, Najib said.
He also expressed his appreciation to Iranian company, Kish Acme Tower
Company which placed its confidence in NGV Tech to build the 52-metre vessel,
SAFIR KISH 3 which was launched during his visit Thursday.
