Observing that the new airport establishes a new
global benchmark, Singh stressed that "all concerned agencies
should now focus on improving passenger connectivity between
the city and the airport to fully leverage the potential of
this terminal."
Praising the "impressive" new airport, Congress
President Sonia Gandhi said quality was not something to be
reserved for prestigious projects, but should become part and
parcel of the design processes for all public projects,
including schools and houses.
"Providing rural and urban infrastructure efficiently
and at the same time achieving high standards must remain our
goal," she said, stressing that efforts should be made to make
all projects environment-friendly like the new terminal.
Gandhi also praised the Delhi Metro and the T-3 saying
"it has demonstrated how the public sector can be galvanised
to excel and can be delivered on time."
Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said this new
airport shows that India has arrived on the international
scene and by next year 35 non-metro airports would be upgraded
by the Airport Authority of India (AAI).
He said modernisation of the airports at Kolkata and
Chennai by the AAI would be completed by next year as also the
35 non-metro airports.
Maintaining that the aviation sector was poised to
grow six times the present level in the next decade, Patel
said like the IT sector before, aviation was now the "sunrise
sector of our country".
A host of dignitaries and industry leaders were
present at the function, including Andhra Pradesh Chief
Minister K Rosaiah. PTI SMJ
