SIFE WORLD CUP 2011 TO ENHANCE M`SIA`S POSITION AS IDEAL BUSINESS LOCATION
PUTRAJAYA, July 6 (Bernama) -- Hosting the Student In Free Enterprise (SIFE)
World Cup 2011 will raise Malaysia's profile in the world, especially among the
younger set, says International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed.
"The SIFE World Cup 2011 will enhance Malaysia's position as an ideal
business location for conducting global and regional businesses," he told
reporters after witnessing the signing of SIFE World Cup 2011 agreement Tuesday.
Malaysia will host the SIFE World Cup 2011 for the first time in Kuala
Lumpur from Oct 3-5 next year.
The agreement was signed by MITI secretary-general Abdul Rahman Mamat and
Bruce Nasby, Executive Vice-President of SIFE Worldwide.
SIFE is a global partnership between business and higher education which
promotes teaching and advancement of free enterprise and entrepreneurship
worldwide.
Mustapa said Malaysia will pay SIFE Worldwide RM1 million (US$312,000) as a
hosting grant and for organising the event.
"We see value in this investment. We want to encourage entrepreneurship in
schools and universities, as this competition has been successful in bringing
young people together throughout the world," he said.
SIFE World Cup 2011 is expected to attract 2,500 participants comprising 40
global SIFE teams, academics and Fortune 500 corporate leaders.
Mustapa said the event provides a platform for undergraduates to develop and
demonstrate their entrepreneurship talent through free enterprises, leadership
and management skills in front of world-class business leaders," Mustapa said.
"Besides encouraging entrepreneurship, the SIFE World Cup 2011 will also
bring in business leaders and hopefully can enhance Malaysia's profile, as
well as promote the country as a tourist destination," he said.
Mustapa said hosting the SIFE World Cup 2011 is also in line with Prime
Minister Najib Razak's call to recognise and reward high performers to propel
the country into the league of high-income nations by 2020.
Meanwhile, Nasby from SIFE Worldwide said Malaysia was chosen to host the
SIFE World Cup 2011 due to government support and adequate facilities.
The competition was held in Asia for the second time.
SIFE World Cup 2008 was held in Singapore. Previous hosts of the event are
London, Mainz (Germany), Berlin, Barcelona, Toronto and Paris.
"Business leaders, university scholars and students travelling around the
world will give Malaysia a large profile and will have a huge impact on the
country's economy," he added.
A national SIFE competition will held at the Putra World Trade Centre from
July 12-13 to pick a winner from 19 teams who will represent Malaysia at the
SIFE World Cup 2010 in Los Angeles from Oct 10-12.
