D8 LOOKS FOR TANGIBLE BENEFITS THROUGH ECONOMIC COOPERATION - MUHYIDDIN

From Muammar Kamarudin

ABUJA (Nigeria), July 9 (Bernama) -- The seventh summit of the Group of 8 (D8)Islamic developing countries has created awareness in delegates on the need for the organisation to harness tangible benefits from the economic cooperation among the members, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said here.

"As was mentioned at the meeting, the discussions at D8 conferences have yet
to produce concrete results," he told a news conference here Thursday night
after the conclusion of the summit.

D8, established in 1997, groups Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran,
Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

Muhyiddin said there was an earnestness among delegates for the D8 to move
forward despite the various domestic matters each of the countries had to attend
to.

"We want tangible cooperation which, we believe, we can achieve under the
leadership of Nigeria," he said. At the summit, Malaysia handed over to Nigeria
the chairmanship of D8, which it had held since 2008.

Muhyiddin said it was necessary to emphasise the role of the private sector
at the early stage in any proposed project.

The private sector would need the support of the governments of the member
countries for the project to proceed smoothly, he said.

He said Malaysia proposed that D8 identify companies interested in food
supply and food security projects, especially pertaining to seed banks and
fertiliser production as the economies of most member countries were reliant on
agriculture.

Muhyiddin said the Abuja Declaration carried a proposal by Iran to establish
a fund for joint ventures, which Malaysia supported, but the details had to be
worked out.

He said D8 had signed an agreement to facilitate issuing of visas to
businessmen of member countries, and expressed the hope that all member
countries would ratify the pact as Malaysia had done.
