CA calls for electing honest, competent candidates in next polls
SRIMONGAL ( Moulvibazar ) Bangladesh, July 21 (BSS)- ChiefAdviser of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed today called upon all to cast their votes for honest and competent candidates in the upcoming elections for the sake of democracy.
"Exercise your rights as a responsible citizen by casting votes in favour of honest and capable candidates who will able to contribute to further flourishing democracy in the next local andgeneral polls by applying your knowledge and wisdom," he said.
The Chief Adviser said this while addressing a dialogue titled, "National Dialogue at Local level for Transition to Democracy", at P D U auditorium of Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI) here. District administration organised thedialogue.
Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury moderated the function that was also attended by LGRD Adviser Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal, Law Adviser A F Hassan Ariff and Communications AdviserMaj Gen Ghulum Quader (Rtd).
Secretary to the Chief Adviser's Office Kazi M Aminul Islam and Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim and high civil and militaryofficials were present.
Farmers, tea garden workers, freedom fighters, teachers, imams, people's representatives, NGO workers, women, smallentrepreneurs and lawyers took part in the open discussion.

Quoting the Election Commission, Dr Fakhruddin said, preparations of holding the next general election in the third week of December this year are in the final stage. He said, the EC has already implemented the huge task of preparation of voterlists with photographs.
The Chief Adviser said, election is one of the pre- requisites of democracy, but not the only pre-requisite. In this context, he called upon all concerned to work unitedly forbringing qualitative changes to democracy.
Dr Fakhruddin expressed the hope that the next elected government would be pro-reform and democratic. He was optimistic about the continuation of reforms undertaken by the presentcaretaker government in future for the welfare of the nation.
Referring to bring amendments to the constitution, he said,the next elected government will do the job.
Referring to the price hike of essentials, Dr Fakhruddin Said, it is an undeniable fact that sufferings of people have beenincreased following price spiral of essential commodities.
In this connection, he said, there is no alternative to boost agricultural production for checking the price hike of essentials. He hoped that the farmers and other stakeholders will come forward to boost production this year that they had doneduring winter season last year.
The Chief adviser during the two-hour long dialogue respondedvarious questions raised by grassroot people and professionals.
The demands included development in the Haor areas, taking steps to use the knowledge of expatriate Bangladeshis for the welfare of the country, setting up government primary schools in the tea garden areas, expansion of Srimongal municipality areasand arranging district council elections.
Answering these questions, he assured them that the government will take appropriate measurers following examiningthese demands.
About tea production, he said, steps would be taken to impart training to the tea garden workers and ensuring balanced distribution of fertilizers to boost tea production. The Chief adviser also attached importance on fixing minimum wages for thetea garden workers to this end.
Responding to a local demand, the Chief Adviser instantly directed the district administration to take immediate measurers for construction of the local library building. He assured the locals for setting up LabourCourt here.
Dr Fakhruddin said, the expatriate Bangladeshis can contribute for the development endeavors of the government in the current changing perspective. He also directed the ministries concerned to take appropriate steps for expansion of SrimongalMunicipality areas.
Later, the Chief Adviser flew for Sylhet where he offered munjat at the Mazar of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) and Shah Paran (R)seeking peace, progress and prosperity of the nation.
The Chief Adviser is scheduled to attend a local level dialogue at the Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution Co Ltd auditorium in Sylhet this afternoon. The Chief Adviser who will make a night halt in Sylhet and chair a meeting of thecouncil of advisers in the divisional town tomorrow morning.
