Opium addicts get medical treatment in Luang Namtha
(KPL) Luang Namtha province is giving medical treatment to 357 opium addicts but there are as many as 1,377 other opium addicts who are presently not getting any medical treatment.
It is hoped that they will get medical treatment in the future.
The province had destroyed 236 areas covering a total area of 80 hectares that had been planted with the deadly opium poppy.
For the years 2006-07, this province provided treatment to 228 opium addicts. However in May 2007 the officials made a survey of opium addicts and found out that the province had 1,734 opium addicts in the treatment centres.
Deputy Head of Drug Control and Suppression Office of Luang Namtha province, Dr. Keopaseuth Outhayor said, "The Public Health Office of Nalae district of Luang Namtha province gave medical treatment to seven opium addicts on 13 June 2008. The opium addicts were held for 10 days under the opium plantation reduction programme.''
