Swiss government assists Lao trade and export

(KPL) Trade promotion and export development in Laos has been boosted by a 2.9 billion kip (US$345,000) grant from Switzerland.

The grant was signed between the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Ms Khemmany Pholsena, and Switzerland's State Secretary for Economics on 11 July, at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

The grant marks the third phase of financial assistance for the tradeproject, which will end in June next year, according to a summary report of the project provided by the ministry.

The project is aimed at building the trade capacity of Laos and developing export strategies. This includes a trade network linking the Lao government,trade institutes, businesses and export companies.

Export strategies will address the needs of sectors wanting to export garments, silk-handicrafts, wood products, medicinal herbs and spices,organic agriculture and tourism services.

The project is also developing strategies for upgrading the trade information service to provide information that will assist institutes, export companies, competency projects, quality export management and tradefinance.

It is also providing training in market analysis, Lao textile and clothingsector analysis, export market research and training of trainers.

The report noted the project was established in July 2004. It provides free technical assistance and is supported by Swiss government, which has so far provided about 8.3 million kip (US$ 970,000) for the project's first phaseand about 6.3 billion kip (US$730,000) for the second phase.
